Australian universities are required to collect annual feedback from their students and the surveys usually contain quantitative questions using a Likert Scale. The surveys are deployed at the subject level and the data collected is published using an average (eg 3.4/5.0 Likert Scale). While this is standard practice, the average masks a number of scenarios. If the count of each Likert Scale is published in full (e.g. with 58 responses – 1.0 (3); 2.0 (8); 3.0 (14); 4.0 (28); 5.0(5)) then you can elicit nuanced improvement of quality at the five points. Over time, you can then develop comparison heat maps with indicators of significance.
